How to change oil in an outboard motor?

As with any motor, changing the oil in an outboard motor is essential to keep it running smoothly and efficiently. It is recommended that you change the oil every 100 hours of use or at least once a year. Here are steps to follow when changing the oil in your outboard motor:

1. First, you will need to gather the necessary supplies. You will need engine oil, an oil filter, a drain pan, a funnel, and a rag.

2. Locate the drain plug on the lower portion of the outboard motor. You may need to remove the lower cowl or trim tabs to access it. Place the drain pan under the outboard motor and remove the plug.

3. Allow the old oil to drain out completely. This process may take up to 15 minutes, depending on how much oil is in the motor.

4. Once the old oil has drained out, replace the drain plug and tighten it securely.

5. Locate the oil filter and remove it using a filter wrench. Be sure to catch any oil that spills out with the drain pan.

6. Before installing the new filter, apply a small amount of oil to the gasket to ensure a good seal. Then, install the new filter and tighten it securely.

7. Using the funnel, pour the recommended amount of new oil into the oil fill hole. Be sure to check your owner’s manual for the exact amount and type of oil.

8. Once you have poured in the new oil, check the oil level with the dipstick. Add more oil as necessary to bring it to the correct level.

9. Finally, start the motor and let it run for a few minutes to circulate the new oil. Check the oil level again, and add more if necessary.

By following these simple steps, you can change the oil in your outboard motor and keep it running efficiently for years to come. Remember to always dispose of used oil properly and recycle it if possible.
